Liberian Registry Introduces Green Ship Recycling Program for Vessels on Final Voyage
To support our clients and partners in sustainable practices and remain in line with the Hong Kong International Convention for the Safe and Environmentally Sound Recycling of Ships, we have launched our Green Ship Recycling Program. This initiative enables owners and operators to streamline the vessel recycling process. The Liberian Registry is proud to promote environmentally responsible discarding of vessels without sacrificing quality standards or slowing down fleet operations.
Registering for Liberia’s Green Ship Recycling Program
Vessels registering (or re-registering) under the Liberian Flag can apply for a "Final Voyage" registration, allowing them to transit in ballast condition to an approved Ship Recycling Facility for dismantling and recycling per IMO guidelines and the Hong Kong Convention. Once registered, the Liberian Registry aids in providing all documentation required to adhere to the guidelines.
Guidelines for Vessels Under the Green Ship Recycling Program
  • Three-month flexibility in the registration and transporting process to the recycling facility.
  • Green Ship Recycling registrations will only allow the registered vessel to reach the selected Green Recycling Facility and will not permit the vessel to be used in any commercial capacity unless to discharge cargo onboard at the time of registration.
  • Upon registration in the Green Ship Recycling Program, vessel owners also have an option to receive an International Ready for Recycling Certificate (IRRC)
    • *IRRCs will become mandatory starting in June 2025
  • For detailed requirements on the Green Recycling Initiative, please refer to Marine Notice POL-017.
